AutoCAD installation request to insert disc 1

December 4, 2015 by Edwin Prakoso 9 Comments

I found this issue when I installed AutoCAD LT desktop subscription on my customer’s computer. As they want to install it immediately after the start date, I downloaded the media and use it for installing on their computers. To make the installation faster, I decided to extract it on my computer then copy it to an USB drive. I don’t want to extract it on their computer because it would take more time.

But apparently this not true. I spent more time because I had this issue.

When the installation is running, a message box appear.

Please insert the disc: AutoCAD 2016 disc 1

This is AutoCAD LT installation, not sure why it asked for AutoCAD disc. I had to click cancel and the installation rolled back.

Apparently the media we downloaded from Autodesk website won’t work from removable media. You need to copy the media to local drive and then run it from there.

Note: if you use DVD or USB from Autodesk you will not see this message box.

The other workaround is to edit the setup.ini file. This file is at the same folder as setup.exe.

Add this line in the setup.ini file

USE_REMOVABLE_DRIVE=YES

This method is described in this Autodesk knowledge base.

I’m amazed that this issue has been there for years but never been fixed. How hard is it to add that line by default to installation media?

I don’t have a disk space in my computer( no disk is integrated), I wanted to install Autocad electrical 2016 but it wasn’t possible because the disk space is zero. I thought of placing an external hard disk but I doubt if it would solve the problem.

You need to remove unnecessary files from your computer. Try using Disk Cleanup.

My autocad 2013 crashed on me while doing some CAD work. I tried to re-install but I am being asked to insert disk #2 which I never had. I have disk #1.

Any suggestions?

My current problem is I cannot draw anything, as soon as I select a drawing tool I get an error message “A software problem has caused Autocad to close unexpectedly”

I can’t even use the the Purge or Recover feature to recover my failed drawing..

Any suggestiions?

I’ve never heard about this issue, asking for disk #2. Have you tried to copy the disk content to your hard drive and try to run the installer from there?
AutoCAD 2013 is no longer supported, so I can’t provide download link for that version. If you have another 2013 installer disk, have you tried using it?

This worked. I did not have to copy files from the USB on to my hard drive. Thanks!

There is no disc 1. Have you tried to copy the files to local drive (i.e. drive C or D) and install it from there?
